Our feeling for those we love increases when we are apart from them.
The sentence above will be understood by those who have not been back to their hometown to visit their parents, siblings and relatives. I myself miss seeing my family members in China and Australia. Even more so, for those in China as grandma is not getting any younger.
I travelled internationally every year. Even in year 2020, I spent 3 weeks in Korea when the pandemic was just starting in Korea. I stayed indoor most of the time in Korea bingeing on Netflix from the moment I woke up until it was midnight. Therefore, those who missed travelling would understand this proverb in a different way.
This proverb is also used when describing lovers who are apart due to unforeseen circumstances. I have found a video but you will have to search for the full movie elsewehere. It is an MV from a Chinese movie, or drama. I have not watched it myself. I do not really have time to watch movies unless I am overseas, spending a few days stuck to the TV screen as TV channels in other countries seemed to be more interesting than the TV channels we have here. Anyway, I have no subscription of any paid cable TV and I do not need one as I have too many things to do during my waking hours.
There are other famous sayings that carry the same meaning as the proverb above:
I have only started reading Shakespeare’s play, Othello, when one of my students went to study abroad and I read the whole play together with her in order to understand what she was studying in a foreign country. Then, I bought the whole book on Shakespeare’s brilliant play. It is really sad that the level of our English language is so shallow that even lower secondary level literature has been scraped off. Is it because there are no educators who are good enough to conduct those literature lessons? Those who get A in English language for SPM should not be proud of themselves at all. Many cannot even string a proper sentence let alone hold a conversation in full English without mixing words from other languages and/or dialects. Students and adults should take their own initiative to read more, not because to sit for examinations, but to improve self and increase knowledge.
I shall not dwell in this, let’s continue. English proverbs in different countries are not similarly phrased but they do have the same meaning, just like how we have our peribahasa.
Spanish proverb:Go to your brother’s house, but not every day
German proverb:Love your neighbour but do not pull down the hedge
